The Winsome World of Natalie Chan

Sunday, February 28, 2016

Designer and businesswoman Natalie Chan.
The sun blazes high in the sky on a blistering January day as I make my way along Auckland’s Parnell Road towards a blush pink awning which bears Natalie Chan’s name. The prettily decorated front window of the boutique is filled with a myriad of fashionably feminine delights which no doubt catch the eye of women of every age, not to mention many awestruck little girls. Natalie Chan’s flagship boutique has been on this prestigious strip since 2009 and in its current spot since 2012. Her atelier is in fact above the boutique, where she works with a small team of talented women to create beautiful millinery, ready to wear and bridal fashion for an ever growing array of clients.

Céline Rita's En Pointe for Summer

Sunday, November 29, 2015

Celine Rita's Dani dress from her 'En Pointe' collection.

There are few labels that have charmed me quite like Céline Rita has over the years. Designer Céline Chapman's style has an effortless and elegant grace that appeals to me on so many levels. There's an obvious femininity about it but not in a fussy or overdone way, and I think that's the key really, Céline doesn't try to do too much. But what she does do is create beautiful yet subtle garments that are oh so easy to wear and integrate into your existing wardrobe. Although admittedly there are a good number of CR garments currently in my wardrobe and I love them all.

Ingrid Starnes' Beautiful Blooms

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Ingrid Starnes Dream Bloom Kimono dress (left) and Dream Bloom Claudette dress (right)

There is not a season that goes by that I'm not really inspired by Ingrid Starnes' winsome collections. Her carefully considered mix of vintage and contemporary styles creates an aesthetic that is demure yet modern, and she somehow creates all the pieces I want to wear each season. Her current collection 'Dreams in Bloom' which I have been meaning to write about for a while now, is another that has me overdosing on the superlatives trying to describe it.

Meet macgraw's Sublime Shepherdess

Friday, October 2, 2015

macgraw's little bo dress from their new collection 'Shepherdess'.

Spring is my favourite fashion season and I have to admit there is nothing that says spring quite like spring lambs, which is just one of many reasons to love macgraw's latest collection. Fittingly the title of this range is 'Shepherdess' and as you can see it's every bit as sweet and pretty as you would expect with that name, right down to the lamb motif on sweaters and in a cute pink-based print. Look below the surface though and you will see a range that is carefully cut, cleverly detailed and uses quality fabrics to create garments that fit beautifully and have an elegant nonchalance.

Juliette Hogan's Sunset Boulevard

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

Juliette Hogan's Lennon Cami and Lawn Culottes from her 'Sunset Boulevard' collection.

As more new season collections arrive in stores every day it's hard to know where to start when shopping for spring, however one collection definitely worth checking out is Juliette Hogan's 'Sunset Boulevard'. She's a designer I've followed since I came across her first boutique on Ponsonby Road in 2007 and one that has consistently designed strong collections that have slowly matured in style as she has.

The Week that was NZFW 2015

Wednesday, September 2, 2015

An outfit from Lucilla Gray's beautiful New Zealand Fashion Week 2015 presentation.

It's hard to believe New Zealand Fashion Week 2015 has been and gone already, this time last week it was near the end of day two of the shows and we had already taken in some stellar debuts and many other captivating collections that mostly showcased winter 2016. Much like many other fashion weeks all over the world NZFW has been slowly shrinking for years and now the trade side of the event is three days long with another three days for public shows and events.

NZFW 2015: FashioNZ Reviews

Friday, August 28, 2015

Ruby's Celesta Playsuit from their 'Tonight, Tonight' collection on the runway at NZFW.

New Zealand Fashion Week 2015 is over for another year and I've spent the week busily reviewing most of the shows for FashioNZ again this year. I'll have more coverage of my own going up here soon but in the meantime you can check out my reviews here.

Romeo 4 Juliet: A Kate Sylvester Love Story

Monday, August 17, 2015

Kate Sylvester's Floria Jumper and Valora Skirt from her R4J collection.

There are few things that signal summer more than a summer romance and this season Kate Sylvester has drawn inspiration from the most well-known love story of all time, Romeo and Juliet. In particular it's the two popular film versions by Franco Zeffirelli (1968) and Baz Luhrmann (1996) that she has reinterpreted with her signature subversive style, making for a beautiful collection that epitomises modern femininity.
